Although Islam is Malaysia's national religion,
the government respects its people's religious freedom. As a result,
various religions have the freedom to expand and develop. It is due to this
remarkable condition that we have applied for official religious land use.
I hope Fo Guang
Monastery will continue to prosper and benefit beings at large.
- Ven. Zhen Ding, Abbot of Fa Hua Monastery, Hua Giam Si, Fo Guang Monastery and Hui Lin
Buddhist Monastery
Fo Guang Monastery is the first temple to introduce Dharma
officially into Pengerang. Founded in 1989, its
abbot, Ven. Wei Xin,
played an active role in inspiring devotees from Malaysia
and Singapore
to learn Dharma at Fo Guang
Chan Si. He started activities such as Instrument and Appreciation course,
Novitiate Program, Observation of Eight Precepts, Seven-day Buddha Name
Chanting Retreat and congregations like Ritual for Feasting Heavenly
Deities.
After he passed away in 2003, his disciple Ven.
Zhen Ding, abbot of Fa Hua
Monastery and Hua Giam
Si, became the abbot of both temples - Fo Guang Monastery and Hui Lin
Buddhist Monastery. Besides continuing his Master's Buddhist activities, Ven. Zhen Ding also plays an active role in propagating
the Dharma, devoting to Buddhist Hymns and Buddhist education, organising various Dharma talks and meditation classes
as well as nurturing the Sangha.
Located on an 8-acre land, Fo Guang displays a strong kampung
style with its natural, simple wooden structure. However, having stood for
more than ten years, and been damaged by floods and weakened by sea wind
and humidity, the building is on the verge of collapsing due to the attack
of termites. The management is left with no choice but to rebuild. The
reconstruction plan is divided into 3 phases. Thanks to the generous
donation of devotees from Singapore
and Malaysia,
a portion of reconstruction funds has been raised. The reconstruction of
the main shrine (first phase) took off last year and completed end of August
this year. Fund raising for the second phase and third phase will follow
subsequently.
As Sungei Rengit
offers a temporary getaway for Singaporeans, Fo Guang plans to transform part of its premises into a
cultural as well as meditative spot in the near future in order to provide
a space for relaxation and re?ection for its
devotees.
