Sagaramudra Buddhist Society: Taking Roots in Our Motherland & Venturing into the World -- by Weidu

Acting as a cradle for the Sangha, Sagaramudra Monastery, after taking roots in Singapore, turns to centre development in Malaysia and Australia. Several years ago, its abbot, Ven.Yuan Fan, and his devotees, established 3 consecutive centres in Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat and Senggarang in Johor State, Western Malaysia. Since then, these centres have been in operation for the last 7-8 years.

The centres in Johor Bahru and Batu Pahat are shophouses which the Monastery has rented, under the kind support of its devotees who charge nominal rental fee for the use of their premises, for the conducting of courses like meditation, Buddhist Hymns and Instrument and Appreciation and adult and children Dharma classes.

The Sagaramudra Meditation Centre in Senggarang was originally established in Pulau Ubin but forced to relocate due to state land acquisition. Fortunately some enthusiastic devotees donated land and construction costs and it was completed in year 2002. The centre stands on a land which was once a mangrove swamp of about 7 acres. It is made up of 3 single storey buildings, and the main shrine, which sits a Burmese Buddha statue, is located in the central building.

“After 15 years of development, we felt we have achieved stability in every aspect, so we started doing regional development. The concept behind our external expansion is “To take Roots in Our Motherland & Venture into the World”. Our roots are primarily based in Singapore, so even if we go to Malaysia, we shall still return and take roots in our motherland. Even if we are in Malaysia, we shall still use the teaching concepts or management system of Sagaramudra, and ultimately move towards nurturing the Sangha in that country. Because only the local Sangha knows the needs of its people. [Actually] our final goal is just to propagate the Dharma only.”
